The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) seeks an experienced and visionary individual to serve as the Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity, to provide leadership in all areas of diversity.

UIC is among the nation’s preeminent urban public research universities, and a Carnegie RU/VH research institution. UIC is the largest university in metropolitan Chicago, serving over 29,000 students and has one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation and 12,500 faculty and staff. It is comprised of 15 colleges, including the state’s major public medical center and six health sciences colleges and schools. At UIC, diversity is fundamental to the mission, the culture of the campus, and its academic programs and institutional identity. UIC has been recognized nationally for its ongoing leadership in matters of diversity and inclusion. U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” recently ranked UIC among the top 12 of 262 Carnegie classified national institutions for campus ethnic diversity. UIC has become the major center for Latino education in the Midwest, granting the largest number of baccalaureate degrees and enrolling the largest numbers of Latino graduate and professional students. Recently, INSIGHT Into Diversity, awarded UIC the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award and it was named one of the nation’s 25 best campuses for LGBT students by Campus Pride and Huffington Post. Based upon its full time undergraduate enrollment, UIC is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Institution (AANAPISI), and in 2015, UIC was designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

The Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity will report to the Chancellor and the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago and will serve as a high-level advisor on initiatives and issues in connection to diversity and inclusion. These include, but are not limited to: how to create a more inclusive campus, how to address climate issues in and out of the classroom, and how to help all students and faculty thrive at a university where there is no majority ethnicity or race.

The Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity will facilitate campus-wide efforts to enhance a campus culture where diversity is a core principal. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the Office of Diversity, which currently includes five full-time staff, and provide active oversight and support to its reporting units and committees to maintain and cultivate UIC’s diversity while expanding understanding of its value as a cornerstone of academic achievement and innovation. Reporting units and committees include the: Early Outreach Program, Chancellor’s Status Committees (African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, LGBTQPA, Persons with Disabilities, and Women), and the UIC Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change (African-American Cultural Center, Arab American Cultural Center, Asian American Resource and Cultural Center, Disability Resource Center, Gender and Sexuality Center, Rafael Cintron Ortiz Latino Cultural Center, and Women’s Leadership and Resource Center);
  • Develop and track diversity evaluation metrics with respect to students, staff, faculty and administration;
  • Assist units/colleges in developing tactical diversity plans.
  • Manage available resources, including obtaining external grant funding, to achieve strategic goals;
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of relevant trainings, informational sessions, and programming related to diversity issues (e.g., search committee training, mentorship programs and scholarly programs);
  • Partner with colleges to lend support and assistance to their student and faculty recruitment and retention efforts;

The successful candidate must hold a post-graduate degree, be a skilled administrator with significant experience in program building and administration, and have the ability to mobilize leaders from various institutional and community sectors around shared diversity goals. Familiarity with higher education is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to design bold, creative and innovative initiatives and to command the respect of colleagues within and beyond the university. The Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost for Diversity will serve as a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and the Provost’s Management Team.
