The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA) provides academic leadership to the university and support to the provost on issues related to faculty. This position reports to the provost, is a member of the Provost’s Leadership Team, and works collaboratively with other vice provosts towards university priorities. The VPFA serves as the provost’s liaison to the University Promotion and Tenure Committee and is responsible for coordinating the committee’s work. The VPFA represents the provost in the faculty collective bargaining process and collaboarates with UIC HR Labor & Employee Relations regarding contract administration issues. The portfolio of the VPFA also includes promotion and tenure policies; faculty orientation, mentoring, and career development programs; mentoring programs for academic administrators; programs to recruit and retain underrepresented faculty; emeriti faculty programs; programs to enhance teaching; faculty awards; and all policies approved by the provost and vice chancellor for health affairs in the Faculty Handbook/webguide. The VPFA also oversees the Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence (CATE), which fosters learning in impactful and inclusive pedagogical and engagement practices that promote student success. The VPFA serves as a member on a range of university-level committees, including the Diversity Advisory Committee, the Faculty Equity Committee, and the Policy on Policies Committee. The VPFA serves as an ex officio member of the UIC Faculty Senate Faculty Affairs and Academic Freedom and Tenure committees.

Candidates must hold the rank of full professor with indefinite tenure and should have a record of demonstrated success in academic leadership; administrative experience, preferably with broad exposure to instructional, research, human resources/employee relations, and related support activities; experience in issues related to faculty academic appointments (tenure-track and non-tenure system); a commitment to principles and practices of shared governance; and a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion. The preferred candidate should also have the ability to collaborate with all UIC colleges and departments; strong communication and  interpersonal skills; experience in building collaborative teams that are proactive and follow timelines; the ability to lead change management efforts towards creating a culture of transformative and inclusive education through the implementation of innovative teaching methods; and a track record of engagement with a variety of colleagues, units, and processes across university as well as with other universities.
